A new drug Voraxaze approved by FDA to counter the side effects experienced in chemotherapy treatments with methotrexate.

FDA approved Voraxaze, a drug to treat the cancer patients with high toxic levels of methotrexate, a chemotherapy drug. The patients receiving high doses of methotrexate may develop kidney failure as a side effect of the drug. As the drug is eliminated from the body by kidney, failure of kidneys will cause high levels of methotrexate in blood.

FDA’s press release states “Prolonged exposure to high levels of methotrexate can result in kidney and liver damage, severe mouth sores, damage to the lining of the intestine, skin rashes, and death due to low blood counts” Quting Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Release continues “Voraxaze is an important new treatment option for cancer patients aimed at preventing these toxicities associated with sustained high levels of methotrexate.”             

BTG, the manufacturer of the drug will market the new drug through its specialty pharmaceutical sales network in US. This drug will join the group of drugs intended to treat rare conditions.
